I have separated Fighting Ground by Avi into 12 sections and have created questions/prompts to go along with each section. I have found with my students, smaller chunks and just a few questions work better. So there is a maximum of 5-6 questions per section. All questions relate to common core somehow.
Each reading response section is placed in boxes so all you have to do is print the number you need, cut, and paste/tape into your student's notebook. I have found this works best instead of having a whole sheet of discussion questions. We discuss the questions and reading the next day. Reading Response notebook is also taken for a grade. Questions provide a sounding board for group discussion the next day.
