This figurative language foldable vocabulary activity (part of my Figurative Language Resource Bundle
) is a great way to teach six figurative language terms - simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiom, and symbol.
The first page is a pre-assessment on which students are asked to match examples to the figurative language vocabulary words (provided in a word bank). I always give this before my figurative language unit; sometimes I'm surprised by what they already know or don't know!
The next four pages are pieces of the flipbook foldable, and I've included easy-to-follow assembly instructions. The great thing about this flipbook is that it requires no cutting, gluing, or complex folding skills. You'll simply copy the pages as instructed, fold on the lines labeled "Fold Here," and slide one sheet inside the other! Students can totally handle putting this together themselves - you deserve a break! :)
Above each figurative language term and definition, there are higher-level thinking questions about the word that will allow students to create their own examples, discuss an author's purpose, and more.
I love this flipbook because it takes students from memorization to understanding to analysis and even creating! Trust me; they will know their figurative language vocabulary after doing this foldable.
