Give your students TONS (that's a hyperbole!) of practice with figurative language. This set includes three passages that are packed with seven different types of figurative language. Students will first read the passage to locate and identify the figurative language, and then will reread to analyze and synthesize the meaning. They will run into some words and phrases which are actually more than one type of figurative language.
I created these passages for my remedial students who needed much more practice with this skill than they would encounter in a normal text. Since my students were struggling, I used the passages in a gradual release model. The first passage we did together, second passage with a partner, and the last was independent. The passages could easily be used as a center or station as well.
