1 page Figurative Language written assessment (with additional 2 page version).
Use as a formative or summative assessment to gauge students' ability to find figurative language in literature. You can choose the book for them, but I usually have students complete this with an on-level book they chose for themselves. I give this assessment after lessons on each type of figurative language. Beyond having students just find usages of these figurative language techniques, the questions further push students to think of what effect the techniques are having on the writing. I want them to find the beauty of this language beyond just seeing it used. That is why I have them stretch to describe what they are noticing.
In the one page version, they will find three of the six different techniques. In the two page version, students will find all six.
Note: To help students remember common figurative language techniques, I teach the acronym OH, SPAM.
