Have your students create a gift they can give to their loved ones by using figurative language such as metaphors, similes, hyperbole and onomatopoeia. This would be a great activity to use once you have covered each of the types of figurative language and students are ready to come up with their own examples. It encourages students to discern between the four types, and it allows you to see if there are still any misconceptions about the types. This activity produces a chance to discuss how the comparison being made affects voice and mood. This activity can easily be adjusted for all ability levels.
Included is a handout on which students can brainstorm their ideas for the final product and an example poster with tips on how to use the picture tools in Microsoft Word to give the poster a polished look.
