These are nine posters on figurative language. Each poster has a clear definition and a set of examples. It is helpful for students to practice each one through discovery and practice.
In the past, I have typically introduced them in the order of: onomatopoeia, alliteration, simile, and personification. Now that I'm teaching fourth grade, I've added to the list!
Once students have done some basic activities, I have them locate each element in poetry pieces or classroom literature. My favorite story to use is “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen. I read it aloud and students begin calling out when they hear similes and personification, etc. It’s exciting for me and I love the way they connect to the techniques.
