This mini-unit includes a variety of activities for helping students to understand and interpret the figurative language devices of personification, simile, and metaphor. Perfect for helping students review for state tests, or just learn to enjoy poetry!
The Powerpoint presentation emphasizes interpreting figurative language (What is the author trying to tell you about ___?) as opposed to just recognizing different forms.
Activities include a poetry anthology assignment in which students create their own poetry "anthology". Students of all abilities will enjoy finding and illustrating poems. Two poetry writing activities are also included. These help students to move past just simple rhyming poems to write poems with figurative language. Poems with multiple choice questions and response are also included.
March 2013: Update 3.0. Updated PowerPoint, new poetry collection, and two assessments added.
