Here's a Figurative Language Quiz with both the student and teacher versions (key). The quiz includes idioms, palindromes, puns, idioms, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, and personification. The format includes a box with figurative language choices and is both "fill in the blank" and explanation answer prompt types. It's one thing for students to be able to recognize figurative language. It's another for them to be able to transfer their recognition to a more abstract level and explain the meanings of several of each type of figurative language. Teachers can differentiate the content and process by readiness - by offering just the fill in the blank portion to some students while offering the entire quiz to others. Then, the students who took the "fill in the blank" only quiz, could work in cooperative pairs to interview classmates on their ideas of the more abstract quiz items and formulate their opinions for response.
