Students use song lyrics to find examples of figurative language! I divide my students into teams of 4-5. They are given ten songs (included with this download) to use on their search to find examples of a Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, and Imagery. Once they find the example, they analyze what the author meant when using that figurative language. The first team to finish wins! There's also an extra credit section at the bottom to keep the early finishers busy while the slower workers catch up. I always have an "Awards Ceremony" at the end of class for my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams.
For planning purposes: This activity took about 45-50 minutes with my 6th grade gifted students, but took about 70 minutes with 6th grade on level students.
