Product Description
These seven print-and-go tri-folds target figurative language. Use these tri-folds over the course of 7 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who needed some targeted instruction and additional opportunities to practice identifying figurative language within text. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

The tri-folds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Tri-fold #1: Similes On Panel A, students circle "like" or "as" and identify the two items being compared. On Panel B, all of the sentences contain "like" or "as", and students must determine whether or not the signal word is being used in a simile. On Panel C, students write their own similes. Finally, on the last two panels, students read 4 short excerpts and 1 longer passage, and identify the similes within each.


Tri-fold #2: Metaphors On Panel A, students identify the two items being compared. On Panel B, students learn the purpose of a metaphor in writing, and revise a sentence so that it contains a metaphor. On Panel C, students differentiate between similes and metaphors. Finally, on the last two panels, students read 4 short excerpts and 1 longer passage, and identify the metaphors within each. The final passage contains two similes to identify, as well.


Tri-fold #3: Personification On the first panel, students identify the object that is personified within each sentence. On Panel B, students write their own sentences with personification. The purpose of Panel C is to review all three literary devices that have been covered in the first three tri-folds. Finally, on the last two panels, students read 4 short excerpts and 1 longer passage, and identify the personification within each.


Tri-fold #4: Idioms On Panels A and B, students identify the meaning of common idioms. For Panel C, I found two uncommon idioms, and placed them in the context of a passage. Students must use context clues to determine the meanings of these two idioms. Panel D contains sentences from the book Liberty, by Kirby Larson, and students must determine whether each sentence contains a simile, a metaphor, an idiom, personification, or none of the above. The final panel contains a reading passage, in which the students must identify four idioms within the passage, and then answer questions about two of the idioms.


Tri-fold #5: Alliteration & Onomatopoeia Panels A and B target alliteration, while Panels C and D target onomatopoeias. The final panel of this tri-fold contains sentences from the book Ida B, by Katherine Hannigan, and students must determine whether each sentence contains a simile, a metaphor, an onomatopoeia, alliteration, or personification.


Tri-fold #6: Hyperboles After being introduced to hyperboles on Panel A, students write their own hyperboles on the second panel. The third panel of this tri-fold contains sentences from the book The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo, and students must determine whether each sentence contains a simile, a metaphor, an onomatopoeia, a hyperbole, alliteration, or personification. Finally, on the last two panels, students read 3 short excerpts and 1 longer passage, and identify the hyperboles within each.


Tri-fold #7: Putting it All Together The main objective of this final figurative language tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to identifying figurative language after reading short passages. Students will likely see questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 3 fiction reading passages. Ten multiple choice questions are included in this tri-fold.
