This assessment task is a great tool to utilize to evaluate students' abilities to identify different types of figurative language. This product assesses their ability to identify similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, and idioms. For older students, it is a “fun” assessment because they can, cut, paste, and manipulate their answers They also love it because they are not writing! Teachers enjoy this assessment because it's a challenging for students to sort the various types of figurative language, it's engaging, and it's easy to use.
When you purchase this item you will receive directions for administering the assessment, the assessment, and a teacher's key.
*You will notice that I have included a color version for projecting and a black and white version for printing. I find this helps my students as I explain the directions.
This task can also be utilized as a cooperative group activity that students can glue into their interactive notebooks. To do this, have students work in think pair share teams. Allow students to utilize resources to determine different types of figurative language definitions and examples. Then have students cut and sort based on the information discovered.
