Figurative language is not only found in literature, but it has now become a significant part of the Common Core. Students are expected to be able to define, identify and apply figurative language in stories, poetry and other forms of literature.
Below, is a set of 12 figurative language task cards (Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personification, Onomatopoeia, Pun, Allusion, Idiom, Paradox, Oxymoron, Hyperbole, Cliche), which include the definition and example/s. Following, there are 18 application task cards, where the students have to identify the figurative device.
The task cards are resourceful review cards that can be:
*Hole-punched and placed in the students’ binders
*Cut out and glued into an Interactive Notebook
*Used for flashcards and/or a study guide
