As a language arts teacher, I often teach about figurative language in the context of reading and writing. It’s always concerned me that once we’ve worked with these terms, there’s not a lot of opportunity for review as the year progresses. To this end, I’ve created the Figurative Language Task Cards, which are aligned with the Common Core Standards.
Each card has a sentence using figurative language and three answer choices for students to consider. Use the Figurative Language Task Cards as a center station, for an introductory activity to your daily class, for whole-class instruction, for a partner review activity, etc. Additionally, I’ve included a terminology page, which reviews the figurative language used on the cards (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, alliteration, assonance, imagery, onomatopoeia, and idiom) for students to use and save.
There are 28 cards, two answer documents, an answer key, and an interactive “What Does It All Mean” finale page. To ensure the longevity of the cards, glue them to tag board or construction paper and laminate them.
