Description

Are you looking for a way to teach younger children about figurative language and idioms? Are you looking for figurative language activities? Then this set of figurative language idiom task cards is for you.

This figurative language idioms activity includes 33 idiom task cards that feature expressions that are commonly used that have different meanings from those stated in the expression. We refer to these expressions as idioms. One set of blank cards is also included.

Warning: Once you make your students aware of how often idioms are used in our speaking, they will begin to catch you using them.

These task cards come in groups of three. The first card is an image that shows the idiom, the second card states the idiom, and the third card is the meaning of the idiom.

Here are some idioms task cards activities that may be fun to use.

Memory

Mix the cards up and turn the cards upside down on the floor or a table. Work with a partner to try and find the 3 cards that go together.

Match Up

Mix up the cards and hand out one image, one idiom, and one meaning to each student. (If there are enough cards, each student can have 2 of each set.) One student reads out an idiom. Whoever has the image and the meaning hands them in. The person who had the meaning reads the next idiom.

Continue until all sets are matched or time is up.

The idioms included are:
