Most students have cell phones and communicate with family, friends, and classmates through text messaging. Just about ALL students are familiar with text messaging. Why not teach and practice Figurative Language and "reading between the lines" in such a way that appeals to their interests?! No student will be able to resist these activities - for real!
This resource features the following Figurative Language types: Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification, and Idiom. There are a total of 10 text message conversations that come in three different formats to support differentiation in your classroom and meets students exactly where they are!
Students are asked to read the text message conversation and identify two examples of figurative language being used. Then they will determine the figurative language types being used: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, or idiom. Finally, they are asked to write the meanings of the figurative language examples.
Worksheet #1: Includes directions that provide students with the figurative language types to choose from: Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification, and Idiom. They will need to identify figurative language examples and their types on their own. This worksheet is appropriate for higher level students.
Worksheet #2: Includes directions that students with the figurative language types to choose from: Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification, and Idiom. They are given some guidance by being exposed to the different Figurative Language types to choose from. This worksheet is appropriate for higher level students. This worksheet is appropriate for “middle-level” students.
Worksheet #3: Includes directions that students with the figurative language types to choose from: Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Idiom, Personification, and Idiom THEIR MEANINGS. There is a section in the worksheet that defines these figurative language types for students. They are given much more guidance by being exposed to the different Figurative Language types to choose from as well as their meanings. This worksheet is appropriate for lower level students.
Please keep in mind that the three differentiated worksheets contain the same exact text message conversation totaling 10 conversations.
This resource is absolutely AMAZING for even struggling readers and lower level students who have a short attention span and/or are unable to keep their focus reading other longer texts.
