Figurative Language Unit
Now includes a 71-slide Figurative Language Prezi and over 12 editable PDF flip book forms!
This complete unit helps students practice identifying and creating examples of eight different types of figurative language: alliteration, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, simile, allusion, metaphor, and irony. The included flip-book templates are a life-long tool that can be utilized to reinforce skills and promote a variety of depth and complexity analysis.
Included are the following:
Use the seven-tab foldable with the included Prezi to introduce your students to the eight main types of figurative language (pg. 5-7). The foldable is organized with three layers:
Tab One - The title of the device
Tab Two - The complete definition of the device
Flap Three - Example of the device
OR you can have students follow along with the included Prezi and write down the definition of the device and examples (pg. 8-10)
For additional practice, I have included a set of worksheets (pgs. 38-52) for each type of figurative language reviewed in the Prezi. These are great for small group work, homework, or sub plans. The answer key is also included of course!
To promote analysis throughout the year, I have also included 5-tab (pgs. 32-34) , 6-tab (pgs. 23-25), and 7-tab (pgs. 14-16) templates that require deeper SAY-MEAN-MATTER analysis.
Tab One - SAY: write down the device word-for-word from
Tab Two - MEAN: explain what the device means
Tab Three - MATTER: explain why the author or character
chose to use this device. How does it influence
the text or explain a character or situation more?
As an added bonus, I have included blank 5- (pgs. 35-37), 6- (pgs. 26-28) , and 7- (pgs. 17-19) tab blank foldable templates that can be customized and used for a variety of activities. These are saved as a FORM, so you just type in your own text or leave them blank for the students to fill out.
