This is a figurative language unit for Elementary students to teach them to understand and use Metaphor! There are 32 individual task Cards, a poster (or anchor chart), a tracking/recoding sheet and answer sheets. I've used 2 QR Codes for Quietube.
Understanding metaphor is a huge step to improving reading comprehension and writing. The illustrated poster has a simply-worded explanation for kids, complete with examples.
The tasks give students practice identifying, writing and justifying metaphor. These activities are also supported with pictures and examples in context.
Once a student understands and becomes familiar with figurative language, he/she will be able to include examples in writing tasks successfully and confidently. This knowledge also improves comprehension, making students aware that literal meanings aren't always right.
This is a great unit for ESL students and adults, teaching the usage ideas.
Although there are 32 task cards, you don't need students to complete all in the same term; revisit later. I find once students understand metaphor, their comprehension skills quickly improve and they begin to deliberately use metaphor when writing.
