Included here is an entire 1-2 week unit on teaching figurative language to kids in a fun way through videos and student sheets that keep them engaged and learning the wide variety of figurative language. I found that the reading curriculum I was teaching from just said "teach figurative language to students" in a vague sort of way, so I developed these lessons. There are many YouTube videos referenced. I do not have rights to these - they are public domain on YouTube, so the web addresses are listed in the documents. I've attached all of the following documents which I think will be really helpful to you:
*Figurative Language Unit, teacher lesson guide (T)
*Figurative Language chart
*Idioms, with video
*Video Resources for Figurative Language (T)
The items with a (T) listed by them are specifically resources for the teacher, while the other documents are for students. I did not do pages for students to complete for each lesson as I know we are all dealing with the crunch of the cost of copies and not wanting students to associate learning with "worksheets." Rather, I made a few pages that I felt were relevant and helped to hold students accountable to their learning. An optional assessment is suggested. My 3rd graders LOVED this unit! I know my 5th graders from a few years ago would have loved it just as much though. Kudos to those people who created fabulous YouTube videos to help with this learning - I couldn't have done this unit without their help.
Thanks for shopping! I hope you love figurative language as much as I do after teaching this unit!!!
