Students will define eight common figurative language terms, such as assonance, idiom, and simile, and then create original examples for each term. The PowerPoint defines each term and gives an example from a literary work.
To help students remember the meanings of each term more deeply, students are asked to write an example of each term as it relates to something in their daily lives, such as "Give an example of onomatopoeia you might hear in the cafeteria."
This is great to use with a descriptive writing unit or a poetry unit, or as a review before reading assessments.
