This document has a variety of figurative language examples and sound devices that students should know in order for them to appreciate the fiction that they are reading. The terms range from the easy to the difficult, and I have included many examples. I teach with three categories of words: 1) elements of fiction; 2) literary devices; 3) figurative language and sound devices.
Hint: As you point out/review these terms with students, record them on poster paper and hang the poster where the students can see the terms. Of course, when you administer reading quizzes, you will need to cover the poster or take it down for the day. I like to use the poster size Post-it paper. The adhesive is strong but does not damage the walls when removed.
