Let me be honest - theme is a hard concept to teach! My concrete thinkers have struggled with this abstract concept all year. After a few depressing attempts at trying to help students decipher a story's theme, I decided to do a lot of research and this was the result. I looked at a lot of teachers' methods of teaching theme, and I built this scaffolded thinking graphic organizer based on my research. I have used it with guided reading stories, whole group stories, SONG LYRICS (my kids LOVED this!)...the possibilities are endless!
I first introduced this tool to my students through a whole group lesson using song lyrics from different Frozen songs. From there, students continued to apply this tool independently to guided reading stories during their reading groups and independent work time.
