This book report is a creative way for students to apply their knowledge of literary terms (Plot diagram terms, climax, theme ), analyze their book, and practice Common Core skills such as summarize, word/vocabulary study, cite textual evidence, and speaking/listening skills. This book report project can be used with any fiction book.
I utilize this book report as a way to individualize and differentiate reading instruction in my classroom. First, students receive the Lexile Level through the county’s benchmarking tests-MAP. Each student is required to find a fiction book that is at the upper-end of their Lexile level. This means that each student will be reading at the level that will help increase his/her reading level. I require the students to bring in the book by a certain date. I conference with each student about their book choice and I place the title and Lexile level in a record on my internet grade book.
Students then use the information provided to create a file folder book report. Included in this product are: A student sample that will illustrate for students what the final product should look like and directions for students to follow. When the book report is due, students present their report to the class.
