This is a printable file folder game with assembly instructions and pictures included. The game is appropriate for students in grades 6-8 studying early colonial U.S. History / Age of Exploration. The game provides both social and academic development, as students work in teams to maneuver a game piece through the perils of a voyage across the Atlantic.
For example, a ship may get lost at sea and have to go back 3 spaces, or disease may strike a crew member dead! However, the choices that students make early-on in the game (like the decision to bring a doctor along), may counter-act the instructions written on the spaces (the doctor can heal a sick crew member). Read the character cards carefully to find out what other "powers" your characters have.
This activity got my students excited to work together toward a common goal, and afterwards they had a more pragmatic understanding of some of the hardships early colonists faced when immigrating to the New World.
