Copies of these fill-in study guides are the most frequently requested item I have from my students as they go on to high school, so I know they are a great resource. During independent work time, I refuse to answer questions for anyone who does not have their five study guides completed and displayed in drop-in sheets in their math folder, but these could also be used as a review activity before major benchmarks or end of year testing or at the beginning of a Math 1 course.
Students can choose the information they need on their guides and use them for practice quizzes or the guides could be filled in as a class activity. Students benefit from processing the information on their own and writing it down so that it makes sense to them. It may take time during class, but don't forego this valuable activity for pre-made handouts! These become prized possessions.
Each study guide fits on a single page (front and back), although I recommend printing them individually and using drop-in sheets so the guides stay in good condition through lots of use while allowing easy revision. I have also provided photographs of some samples to give guidance about what information might be included, but I encourage you to tailor the information to your style and teaching. Several of the guides also have multiple versions of one or more pages to provide differentiation for your students' individual needs.
This two-page fill-in study guide is a great template for all material covered under the Numbers and Operations strand used by Common Core. It includes: number types, decimal expansion, approximating irrational numbers, exponents, radicals, and scientific notation. An alternate version also provides simplifying radicals and polynomial basics for Math 1 students.
Download the Expressions and Equations study guide for free to see if it will work for your classroom. If you like it, feel free to purchase this one or one of the other strands individually or you can get them all as a bundle.
