This variety of number charts and puzzles has been created for the purpose of helping students become strong with their sense of number. Students struggle with many mathematical concepts because they cannot simply count forwards and/or backwards beginning from any number. Several of these charts begin ten numbers before a multiple of 100. This is in order that students are able to practice identifying what numbers come before multiples of 100.
For each section of numbers there is a completely filled in number chart, 3 different fill in number charts with a Bloom's question to stimulate students' thinking about patterns, and a number chart puzzle. The numbers below show the different numbers used for the charts:
Also included is a teacher notes pages for using these resources.
The completely filled in number chart is for teacher instruction and for students to discover patterns. The fill in number charts are for students to independently practice and apply the patterns they have learned. The number puzzles are for students to independently or cooperatively put together to further apply their understanding of patterns.
After students used the 1-100 number puzzle in first grade, they had difficulty cutting out and putting together the whole 100's chart in one class period. If you plan on having students cut out the puzzles, keep in mind that the longer number puzzles are more ideal for students in second grade and older. Using the 1-100 fill in number charts works effectively, however with first graders.
