This sample variety of number charts has been created for the purpose of helping students become strong with their sense of number. Students struggle with many mathematical concepts because they cannot simply count forwards and/or backwards beginning from any number. After second grade there is little attention given to counting past 1,000. Just because students can count to 1,000 doesn’t mean that they understand the patterns that occur in all numbers. These charts are a guide to help students understand numbers that occur after 1,000. Because students have difficulties understanding patterns in large numbers, these charts count by 500 as opposed to counting by 1’s to help students more readily see these larger numbers. These charts would be an excellent prequel to rounding larger numbers. I made them for the purpose of helping students in fourth grade understand rounding because students weren’t able to tell me what number occurred1,000 before or after a number when the number was involving more than four digits.
Number charts: The filled in number charts are in this booklet for students to observe patterns with and/or without their teacher’s guided discussion. Filling in the number charts will probably not take an entire hour class period. Guiding the students into a discussion about vertical, horizontal, and diagonal number patterns before and after filling out a number chart will be most valuable to the students in developing recognition of number patterns.
The fill in number charts could be placed in centers if laminated for students to use with a dry erase marker.
