A story with verb conjugation in the preterite (could also be used for imperfect). Students fill in the blanks with their own Spanish nouns, adjectives, etc. Great to review older vocab, or new, depending on your chapter. Fun for students to create their own stories, rather than reading one that is given to them.
-After filling in the blanks and conjugating, I normally have them switch stories and read the story of a partner, and then answer the questions on the back in either English or Spanish.
