Each year I do an activity with my students where they write compliments about each student in the class. I got this idea from a story that was read to me about a teacher who did something similar and made a difference. I can only hope that I do the same.
Each student receives a heart that is passed around the room for each kid to write a compliment. I include a picture and their name on the heart. As the teacher, I make a heart for myself and take part in the writing for each student. I have included detailed directions, a copy of a finished product, as well as the story that gave me the idea to do this each year.
It is a truly heart warming experience to see kids who may not hear nice things about themselves read 25 plus compliments. I have done this for 8-9 years, and any student I ask remembers the activity and the majority still have their hearts somewhere.
