Hugo Film Guide
Use film to introduce the following Common Core State Standards:
1. Determine two or more central themes of a text and how these themes unfold throughout the text.
2. Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
3. Analyze the impact of the filmmaker’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (setting, how action is ordered, how characters are introduced and developed.
The film guide includes graphic organizers that ask students to discuss characters, setting, and theme. The guide also includes a writing prompt.
Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times film guide: This is a great lesson addition for a unit that explores working conditions and poverty in the United States. The film viewing guide asks students to track labor conditions experienced by "The Tramp," and to consider to what extent the film supports or denies the following quote: “The factory strips the workers of their humanity.”
