I have used this project successfully in both level 1 and level 5 German. The assignment is written generically to apply to any language.
Students are asked to teach the class for 10 minutes. They can teach anything they want as long as they use no English. Students are permitted, though not required, to work in groups. If they work in groups, they are expected to share the burden of communication and presentation equally. Groups will teach for 10 minutes per member of the group.
This project is usually assigned at the beginning of 4th quarter to provide students with enough time to gather necessary materials and write scripts. I give both levels time to work in class, though level 1 gets more. I require students to turn in a draft of their script approximately two weeks in advance and conference with them regarding errors and trouble spots.
Projects are graded based on communication skill (target language use, pronunciation, vocabulary, clarity) and presentation preparedness (kept audience interest, answered questions, demonstrated clearly, provided materials and time).
Past projects have included: icing cupcakes, making bookmarks, making bubbles, making a 3-point basketball shot, swinging a bat properly, and tying a neck tie.
