This is an intervention packet designed to address the sub-skill, Final Sounds, on the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) for Kindergarten. The packet is aligned in a suggested continuum for teaching this skill. The steps to this process include:
Level 1: Can the student articulate the final sound in a word? Students will listen to the teacher state a word and they will articulate the last sound.
Level 2: Can the student match together 2 pictures that begin with the same final sound? This is a puzzle format. Students will select a puzzle piece. They will articulate the last sound in the word that names the picture on the puzzle. Finally, they will search for another picture that begins with the same last sound to create their puzzle.
Level 3: Can the student identify a picture from a set that has the same final sound as a picture prompt? Students will listen to the word that names the picture at the top of the card. Students will listen and compare this final prompt sound to the three pictures at the bottom. Students will identify the picture at the bottom that has the same final sound as the target picture at the top.
The final sounds addressed in this packet include /f/, /g/, /k/, /z/, /ch/, /th/, /l/, /r/, /v/, /s/, and /sh/.
