The goal of this guide is to walk you through the thinking and concepts you need in order to figure out for yourself the answer to the question “Why do we flip over the second fraction when dividing?”
You’ll then be able to do the same for your students! In fact, this style of learning is exciting and contagious.
You will find yourself eager to show people at work, at the grocery store, and at home how it works because finally SOMETHING ABOUT FRACTIONS WILL MAKE SENSE!
You do not need to be a math teacher to understand or make use of this guide. You can use this technique at all levels of learning for students who are learning or using fractions. No matter what grade level, this type of teaching is seen as *real* teaching (as opposed to memorizing steps) and it helps the students learn how to think (recognize and apply patterns).
I have intentionally cut off the last bit that explicitly gives away the answer to the mystery. You absolutely deserve the wonderful feeling of "AHA!" when you figure out the patterns and the answer to the question. You will naturally want to share it with others as it is so exciting. This is the kind of learning that makes students interested.
This does apply to common core standards - but I'll have to revise it in the future to include those.
