This project is to help upper level secondary students prepare for their future. They will pick a career, find the average yearly salary, and determine bi-weekly take-home pay after taxes. They will calculate health and car insurance, find a place to live in a city of their choosing, and pick a car to buy. When buying a house and a car, the students will calculate the monthly payment for each. The students will then create a budget, decide on utilities, and also decide what to put in savings. At the end of the project, there is a reflection sheet that will give the teacher insight into the students thoughts on the process of discovery as well as evaluating the project in general. A possible grading rubric is also included.
I used this project in my Statistics class during the last semester. The students had the project for about 6 weeks and we would periodically work on it in class once we covered the topics of expected value and financial math. My students enjoyed the project and claimed that it was very relevant to their future planning. They also enjoyed that the project was very individualized with their own choices.
