This is a game is for practicing letter recognition both in Alphabet order and a mixed-up order. This game is great as a Minds On before guided reading or small group alphabet work. Once kids have practiced the rules of the game, I included this as a language centre.
Small counters/game chips to cover up letters as they have been drawn
Container to hold the letter cards
4 players each with their own game board and counters
One at a time, each student pulls a letter card from the container, identifies it and all students then find the corresponding letter on their game board.
The winner is the last letter to be covered (not a student)
*Variation - each student secretly selects a winning letter (predicts which one they think will be last) and identifies it on a piece of paper that is hidden from the other students. The winner is then the student who chose the correct letter (if anyone). OR puts a special counter (heart stone, different colour chip etc. ) on their predicted winning letter.
Great for letter assessment and practice.
Could do identification of letters by letter sound for higher students.
