Use your favorite trade books or stories to find figurative language. This can be an ongoing chart to keep track of examples of figurative language. I usually spend a week going over each of the kinds of figurative language. Then we read the books Love That Dog and Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech. I have my students look for figurative language while we read these books and document their findings on this graphic organizer. You could use this with your whole class, or give to students to use independently as they read on their own. A great way to apply and access their knowledge of figurative language!
