Letters and Letter Sounds are crucial for emergent learners to learn in order to learn to read. So I began having my students make Find It Jars the last several years to aid in the learning of these necessary skills . The jars are similar to the commercially produced games on the market and when I saw one, I knew I had to adapt this into a learning tool for my emergent readers.
This activity does require you to purchase or get donations for some of the items you need to prepare these for your students. Included you will find a shopping list of what you will need. You can adapt that list to spend as little money as you wish but still get the same benefits. Your local dollar store will be your best friend for this project.
Included you will find the following items:
☀Directions on how to make the jars
☀A letter sorting mat so your students can find a letter bead for each letter of the alphabet, plus their special letters from their first name.
☀A tag to attach to the bottle explaining this to parents.
☀Letter Identification Cards
☀Letter Sound Correspondence Cards
☀Shopping List so you can gather your items needed
I use this activity in my Intervention Room with small groups of students but you can adapt it to use with small groups within the regular classroom as well. Your students will be so excited to use these and I feel as educators, it's all in the marketing as far as getting our students involved and excited about learning. This project fits the bill and your students will enthusiastically give this project a thumbs up!
