PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I designed this activity to help my students build on their letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, emergent reading, and writing skills. They love it! I work with children of all developmental levels and this activity is great for all of them.

Here are some variations we use it for:
1. There are 2 mats (worksheets) per letter and 8 corresponding picture cards (word wall cards) - which equals 4 pages per letter. I have the children start by identifying the first letter of each word that is underlined and saying its sound. I have the children look at the pictures on the mat and the word written next to it and either read it, or sound out as many letters as they can. They then find the word wall cards that match the mat and trace the words.
2. For children who are unable to complete the entire activity, they can:
- Say the initial letter and sound of each word. Trace the words with their finger. Match the word wall cards to the mat.
- Only match the word wall cards to the mat
- For my youngest students, I give them the word wall cards alone and we talk about the different pictures and what letter they start with. They have a fun time playing with and organizing the cards.

Children will develop the following early literacy skills by learning:
- letter identification for upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core: RF.K.1.D.)
- one-to-one letter-sound correspondence (Common Core: RF.K.3.A.)
beginning letter sounds (phonemes)
- emergent reading skills as they read and write the word on each strip by looking at the corresponding picture (Common Core: RF.K.4.)
- print/write upper- and lowercase letters (Common Core: L.K.1.A.)
* This activity corresponds to Common Core Standards; however, you do not need to follow Common Core to use this activity and benefit from it.
