For this center, you would give each student a game board and a stack of beginning sound picture cards and a stack of letter cards. You can choose which picture cards and letter cards you put in their piles based on the sounds you have taught. They should be mixed together and turned upside down. The student will draw one letter card and place it in the top box. Then the student should draw picture cards and identify the beginning sound. If the picture card begins with the letter sound on the board, they place it in one of the bottom boxes. If it does not match, the student should discard it into a separate pile until all three picture cards are found. Then the student should put the cards back in a pile and draw a new letter card and repeat the game.
** After students have practiced and mastered their sounds, it would be fun to set a timer or race a friend to see who can find three first.
This is perfect for literacy centers, but can also be pulled for intervention or if the class needs more practice with a particular sound. Directions are included.
