Find My Feathers! A Short Vowel Word Family Card Game is great practice/assessment for beginning readers!
Lay out the word families you are using. Players take turns selecting feathers, reading them, and putting them with the appropriate word family. When a player places the 4th feather with a turkey, s/he should read all four words and then take the feathers and the turkey. The game is over when all feathers have been placed. The winner is the person with the most
There are 18 word families and 72 words to match. You can choose to use all 18 word families, or select those that fit your needs and add more as your students' skills grow.
I included several options for design so that you can choose what works best for you and your class. If you prefer to save cutting time, you could cut out the word families and feather as rectangular cards. Another option is to cut out the larger turkeys and the feathers. You can even attach the feathers to clothespins so the students enhance their fine motor skills when they clip the clothespin to the turkey!
This would work well with an RtI (Response to Intervention) group, in a center, as an assessment, or even as practice reading homework!
