Find a Classmate will get your students out of their seats on the first day of school! There is always so much information to impart during the first week of school. It’s not fun for students or teachers. This activity gives everyone an opportunity to stand, stretch legs, walk around the classroom, and get to know each other. The directions are simple and are included on top of the activity sheet. Just be sure to review the rules before saying “GO!”
1) Travel around the room and mingle with your new classmates.
2) Have classmates write their first names in the squares below for the characteristics that apply to them.
3) No more than two squares can be completed by the same classmate.
4) You may sign your own paper - but only once.
5) Have fun!
Give students 10-15 minutes to mingle. You can use a timer or decide when to stop based on student progress. Optionally, you can give prizes to first finishers. Once everyone is back in a seat, use a show-of-hands poll, so you and your students can see who has each characteristic.
FYI - I copy this activity and my All About Me Time Capsule activity back to back on one sheet of paper. They are the perfect combination for the first day of school. My kids love them both! It starts the school year out with fun and sharing!
