Looking for an innovative way to get your students to find partners. Or just need an kinesthetic activator/closure for your math block. These cards are a great way to reinforce number sense while getting students working together.
Included are 11 sets of 28 cards that are aligned to Common Core standards from Operations and Algebraic Thinking and Numbers and Operations in Base Ten. The cards include a variety of ways to show numbers to encourage students to think flexibly about numbers including ten frames, base ten blocks, tallies, hands, numbers, and equations.
- Sums to make 5
- Sums to make 6
- Sums to make 7
- Sums to make 8
- Sums to make 9
- Sums to make 10
- Teen numbers (2 sets – 10-16 and 14-20)
- Sums to 9
- Differences to 6
- Mixed Sums and Differences
To start, distribute as many as needed. If you have an odd number of students, you can participate as a pair, have a student be the judge and ask partners how they know the fit together, or be sure the cards have enough for a group of 3. Be sure to preview the cards so that each partner has a pair. Have students look for a match (ie. for the sums to make 8 a student with 6 would look for a partner with 2). Have partners discuss how the know they fit together.
We use these cards over a couple days or a full week to build students fluency. I hope you enjoy using these cards!
