Looking for a way to get students to apply the phonics skills you teach? Here it is!
I will use this notebook throughout the entire year as I teach our 2nd Grade Pathways to Reading curriculum. Each time a new sound or spelling pattern is introduced we will add some examples to the correct page in this notebook. Then, as students begin to notice these patterns during their reading and writing time they can add to the book on their own. I give a reward (classroom money in my case) each time a student fills a column with 10 words that correctly fit that pattern!
At the top of each page you will see the sound or spelling pattern we are working on. The order may seem a bit random to you if you do not use Pathways to Reading. You could always reorder the pages in a way that makes sense to you or have the students turn to whatever page you may be working on. We start multisyllabic patterns at Christmas; so the second half of the book will be multisyllabic words.
The way I labeled the columns is also the way Pathways to Reading introduces spelling patterns. The spelling is listed first, followed by the sound it makes in the //. For instance… ge /j/ (ge is a spelling pattern that sounds like /j/ as in gem). I added an example for each pattern to help non-Pathways users understand the label meaning.
Enjoy! My kids LOVE finding the pattern on their own and I know it helps them connect the teaching to their own reading and writing.
