When introducing or reinforcing a topic, I want the students to discover a method.
Students (in groups of 4) will use counters to discover how to find the average. You can model it in the front of class with a group of four students if you don't have the opportunity to get to groups of 4 students individually.
Subskills taught in the group activity:
- The word mean is introduced in this activity to familiarize the students that mean and average are synonyms.
- Students learn how to predict the average.
After modeling how to find the average using a multi-sensory approach, I have a notes sheet with the finding the average rule in words and in a song. Singing the song and posting it on the wall or in their binders is an excellent tool to build consistency in yours and their language to build their memory of this two-step rule.
To practice finding the average, the students have 8 real-world problems with defined and ample space to complete each problem on their paper.
