Main Idea: Scaffolded
Main idea is a difficult concept for students to grasp. Often, main idea is taught by having students identify the topic sentence, but this doesn't always work. This 47-page main idea packet helps scaffold students into having a true understanding of the difference between main idea and details.
Students practice main idea in a variety of ways before introducing main idea and details within paragraphs.
1. Students sort words into groups and determine an appropriate title (the main idea) for each of the groups.
2. Students are given a main idea topic and have to come up with supporting details.
3. Students are given supporting details and have to determine the main idea.
4. Students are given several related words and have to determine which of the words represents the main idea.
Finally, students practice main idea and details within text.
1. Students are given a paragraph, and they have to determine which sentence in the paragraph does not belong because it does not support the main idea.
2. Students are given a short paragraph and 4 sentences about the paragraph. They must determine which sentence represents the main idea of the paragraph, and which sentences are details.
An answer key is included in this main idea practice packet.

Included: 5 main idea mazes, a student recording sheet to help you understand your students' thinking, and answer keys.
Second Center: Main Idea and Details Matching Game
This is a 2 player matching game. There are 8 paragraph cards and 8 corresponding main idea cards. Students try to match up the paragraphs with their main idea.
Included: 8 paragraph cards, 8 main idea cards, student instructions, student recording sheet, and answer key
Third Center: Main Idea and Details Sort
This can be an independent, partner, or small group activity. Students must match up details with the correct main idea. There are 4 main idea cards and 12 detail cards. All of the main ideas and details are on the same topic - the human ear. Students must think critically to determine which details match up with which main ideas.
Included: 4 main idea cards, 12 detail cards, student recording sheet, and answer key
The centers are fairly low prep. The Main Idea Mazes just need to be printed and copies. The other two centers require a little cutting and optional laminating.
