Here is a fun activity for students to practice finding the main idea and supporting details that uses a bag filled with different items. The students have to think about how the items relate to one another and what the main idea would be of all of the items together. This can be done large or small group, as you slowly pull out each item, one at a time. There should be one item (generally the last, but it does not have to be) that ties them all together. This shows students that, just like reading a paragraph, they must read through the entire paragraph.
What is included:
- 1 page lesson plan
- 3 pages of worksheets for bags with 4, 5, or 6 items/details
- 3 pages that show item suggestions for 3 different bags I have used with my own students
- 1 page/handout to remind students, "When thinking about Main Idea, don't forget to..."
