This common core aligned unit includes is to be used to prep students to view Finding Nemo and analyze one of the characters.
The unit includes:
- handouts/guided note-taking
- a non-fiction reading
- discussion activities
- essay assignment & rubric
- supplemental handout on thesis statements
Because most of the characters in the film have a disability of some sort, I teach this unit in an inclusion class (with a co-teacher) and usually have 6-10 students with cognitive or physical impairments. It is consistently one of their favorites, but it would work well for any 7-10th grade ELA courses. The unit is designed not only to get students to begin writing analytical character analysis essays but also to get them to think about disabilities in a new way.
