Product Description
FEBRUARY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, and it will be time to celebrate Black History Month. Some of us even begin earlier, in January, when we teach our students about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Teachers today are lucky. There is so much more information about African American heroes available now than there was when many of us were students. My goal is to bring Black History Month heroes to life in a way that is interesting and engaging to students.

This product is designed to pick up where other color-coded text evidence activities leave off. As students get older, they are using more and more of their evidence in their writing. They are expected to provide longer written answers. Still, we have reluctant writers in our classrooms. We have times when we need to give our upper elementary students a reminder about the importance of providing text evidence as support for their statements. I have used this activity as bell work, homework, and classwork. This particular packet will be the one I use to practice finding text evidence in the as we return from the holiday break and into February, when we will celebrate Black History Month. This packet highlights 10 real-life African American heroes (in a two-page, biographical format) that will thrill your students. They are perfect for this time of year. Students will enjoy reading each biography, and will be accountable for finding several pieces of text evidence without the stress of writing long and involved answers. Each biography is followed with several find the text evidence questions (reading comprehension, finding details, and inference questions), and two vocabulary development questions.
