This is a document that allows your students to explore synonyms for words that you notice them using too often. The document utilizes the words "said" and "walk/run" as these are words I notice my students using too often in their writing.
Students can explore connotation and word meaning as they create their own word bank for synonyms for the words "said" and "walk/run."
Students can then fill in sample sentences and create their own sentences with their new word bank.
This is flexible, as it can be used as individual work, partner work, small group work, and whole class work.
While there are many other words that students seem to use too often, I have found these to be the most common when students are writing in the upper elementary grades.
This activity can be used as a class assignment, as an extension, as a minilesson, as homework, or in small guided reading groups.
