Product Description
This is a double set of 28 task cards designed to help students find the volume of a rectangular prism with a fractional dimension. The two sets of cards are identical except for the orientation of the prism. In the easier set, the fractional face is entirely visible on all cards. In the more challenging set, the fractional face is partially hidden.

These cards were made for beginners and each prism has only one dimension that includes a fraction. Each one can be solved by counting the pieces and combining each portion.

I used these with above level fifth graders. They struggled with this concept at first, as they could not correctly identify the dimensions of each shape. They also were not correctly finding the volume because of multiplication mistakes with fractions. I wanted to have them use the distributive method of multiplying (rather than rewriting as improper fractions and cross-canceling), and I needed a solid model to show what they were doing.

For some students, they needed practice in finding the dimensions before we could move to finding volume. I made several different recording sheets to use with these cards so that I could differentiate within my room and focus on the necessary skills. I had the kids work with a partner as they worked through the cards. Each student had a wipe off board and I circulated to talk to them as they worked.

I purposely only labeled the dimension that was fractional because I wanted them to be able to identify each unique dimension independently.

I made a follow-up set of cards (intermediate) to this set, which is also available in my store. In that set, I moved on to prisms with 2 fractional dimensions. Those were significantly more difficult for the kids, and having a solid understanding of identifying the dimensions was crucial.

This is a 23-page PDF file. There are 2 sets of 28 task cards (56 total cards) that are identical to each other, aside from the orientation of the prism. There are a variety of recording sheets to choose from, and an answer key. I also made a homework sheet for the students, and it includes an answer key.
