Two possible timelines for instruction are outlined for you. Choose one or create your own!
• Day #1 (30-45 minutes) – Show entire PowerPoint presentation; have students complete exit ticket; collect, score, and determine which students need remediation.
• Days #2-5 (10-20 minutes) – Remediate with practice sheets as necessary and have other students work on differentiated mixed practice sheets.
• Day #6 (10-20 minutes) – Administer assessment.
• Days #1-4 (30 minutes) – Show one section of the PowerPoint; have students practice featured skill.
• Days #5-8 (10-20 minutes) – Have students practice with differentiated practice sheets.
• Day #9 (10-20 minutes) – Assessment
• Advanced - Use Mixed Practice 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A. Students must determine which words in a short text can be figured out using the four strategies, as well as identify the strategy used and the definition. Assessment A may be used to assess this group. Note: This version is not for all advanced learners. If, for example, a student says that he/she “knows all of the words” or “can’t find any,” it’s time to shift to B.
• Average - Use Mixed Practice 1B, 2B, 3B, and 4B. Students receive the same (or very similar) paragraph as the advanced group, but the words are already identified (and boldfaced) for them. Assessment B may be used to assess this group.
• Remedial - First, employ worksheets that target specific skills: Using Commas and Parentheses, Using Context Clues, Using Word Parts, and Using Related Words. Second, have students continue to practice with Mixed Practice 1C, 2C, 3C, and 4C. Students receive the same (or very similar) sentences and words; however, the sentences are broken into small chunks to help students focus on a shorter text. Use Assessment C for this group.
